Learn how to make delicious Better Than Anything Bars. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 box of devil’s food cake mix
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1/3 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 cup caramel sauce
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans (optional)

While I love the rich, nutty flavor of pecans, feel free to leave them out if you’re catering to nut-free preferences. Or, if you’re feeling adventurous, try swapping them with walnuts or almonds for a different twist.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the devil’s food cake mix, melted butter, and evaporated milk until a thick batter forms.
  3. Spread half of the batter evenly into the prepared baking dish and bake for 8-10 minutes, just until the edges are set.
  4. Remove from the oven and pour the sweetened condensed milk over the baked layer, followed by the caramel sauce.
  5. Sprinkle the chocolate chips and pecans evenly over the caramel layer.
  6. Dollop the remaining batter over the top, gently spreading it to cover the filling as much as possible.
  7. Return the dish to the oven and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the top is set and slightly cracked.
  8. Let the bars cool completely before slicing, allowing the layers to meld together beautifully.

As you work through these steps, remember that cooking isn’t just about precision — it’s about intuition, much like how Mama Lu taught me to bake without measuring cups, relying on feel and heart instead.
