Learn how to make delicious Southern Style Seafood Stuffed. Easy recipe with step-by-step instructions.

Ingredients

Scale

  • 1 pound fresh white fish fillets (such as cod or haddock), finely chopped
  • 1/2 pound cooked shrimp, peeled and chopped
  • 1/2 cup finely diced onion
  • 1/2 cup finely diced celery
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped green bell pepper
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Old Bay seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional, for a little kick)
  • 1/4 cup freshly chopped parsley
  • 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup crushed buttery crackers or panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper, to taste

Substitution Tip: If you can’t find fresh white fish, frozen works just fine — just be sure to thaw and pat dry before using. For a dairy-free version, swap the cheddar for a vegan cheese alternative or omit it entirely, and use olive oil instead of butter in the topping.

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F. Prepare a shallow baking dish by lightly greasing it with butter or oil.
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, sauté the diced onion, celery, and green bell pepper in a tablespoon of butter until softened and fragrant, about 5 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute, careful not to let it burn.
  3. Transfer the sautéed vegetables to a mixing bowl. Add the chopped white fish and shrimp, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, Old Bay seasoning, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper if using, and chopped parsley. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  4. Gently fold in the shredded cheddar cheese, being careful not to overmix — you want the cheese to melt just right while baking.
  5. Transfer the mixture into the prepared baking dish, spreading it out evenly.
  6. In a small bowl, combine the crushed crackers or panko breadcrumbs with the melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture generously over the seafood filling to create a golden, crispy topping.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the filling is heated through. You’ll know it’s ready when it bubbles gently around the edges and the crust is beautifully toasted.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it rest for about 5 minutes before serving. This pause helps the flavors settle and makes it easier to scoop.

“Mama Lu always said, ‘Patience in the kitchen is like a pinch of salt—it just makes everything better.’ Waiting those extra minutes before digging in really lets the flavors sing.”
